In this article we try to show how the work of the Portuguese writerLiberto Cruz establishes a compromise between the poem as text freeof any ideological imposition and the poem as social and politicalaction; between the internal and personal experience of the authorand his commitment to the history of the country; between the selfsufficiency of the poem and its links to the larger world; betweencommunication and elevation; between the work’s expansion ofimage and semantics and the communication of feelings, emotionsand ideas; and between the textual “I” and the biographical “I”.

Poeta, romancista, cronista, dramaturgo e autor de livros destinados ao público infantil e juvenil, Valter Hugo Mãe (Saurimo, Angola, 1971) é um dos escritores mais importantes do atual panorama literário português. A sua obra, lida em Portugal e no estrangeiro, reconhecida pela crítica especializada mas ainda não suficientemente estudada, solicita cada vez mais, pela sua riqueza e complexidade, um estudo de conjunto. Com este livro, que reúne trinta e oito ensaios de estudiosos da literatura portuguesa, proponho-me contribuir para a divulgação e o conhecimento de uma obra que, já consideravelmente extensa, se distribui por diversos géneros do discurso e alcança por isso um público amplo e diversificado.

Like the generation connected with the Lisbon-based journal Orpheu, the group connected with the journal Presença also embraced satire comfortably and understood it as one of the components that most accentuates the critical dimension of the artist’s multifaceted personality. In this article, which seeks to fill a void in the studies of the Presença group, I assert that their satire is one of the processes through which the personality of the poet is revealed in confrontation with the world and with others. But satire and satiric notes are also expressions of the dialogical alterity of an egotistical I-poet with his Id and his Superego (Freud). The satire of José Régio and Miguel Torga is a force that comes from a person conscious of his uniqueness and of his will to impose the sovereignty of his psychic voice on reality or on a sometimes imposing hyper-reality.

The article presents the celebrated peleja (verse exchange) between Inácio da Catingueira and Romano da Mãe d'Água in the Brazilian North-East. The polemic peleja de cordel (a kind of chapbook), which evokes a poetic contest that allegedly took place in 1874 or 1875 in Recife, is regarded as the first of a kind that forms one of the most important phases in Brazilian cordel literature. On the one side stands a slave poet and on the other a landowner; each aims to defend and to characterize the race and social class to which he belongs. The article aims to demonstrate the influence of scientific thinking in popular literature, particularly with regard to ethnic and cultural miscegenation.

Em 1971, saía no Funchal um livro de Liberto Cruz (1935), Gramática Histórica, que se propunha desconstruir paródica e satiricamente a linguagem e a ideologia do regime salazarista. A obra, como nos lembra o autor na edição de 2007, esgotou numa semana. Quando a crítica oficial se apercebeu do registo subversivo dos textos, já todos os exemplares estavam nas mãos de "atentos e desobedientes leitores" (Cruz, 2007: 10), como se lê no apontamento introdutório da edição de 2007, assinado por Liberto Cruz, que opta por um título muito oportuno, porque abrange os leitores que necessitam da nota para compreenderem o contexto em que surgiu o livro, mas também visa aqueles leitores que conhecem já a história deste livro: "Nota desounecessária dos autores" (entenda-se: "desnecessária", "ou necessária"), porque na primeira edição o autor oculta a sua identidade sob um pseudónimo: Álvaro Neto, que, em 1966, no segundo e último caderno da Poesia Experimental, aparece como autor de vários poemas.

A poesia oral não pode ser compreendida fora da estrutura social em que vive, nem o funcionamento da comunidade pode ser integralmente apreendido sem um conhecimento da sua poesia de transmissão oral. Por isso, neste estudo, influenciado pelo pensamento de José de Almeida Pavão Júnior e Paul Zumthor, procuramos demonstrar que uma abordagem séria da poesia oral não pode fixar-se unicamente no âmbito do literário, nem apenas nos seus aspectos culturais, antropológicos e sociológicos. A poesia oral, como as tradições em geral, só existe porque cumpre funções. Refletir sobre este aspecto é também pensar sobre o contexto social e cultural da performance literária, a idiossincrasia dos poetas-intérpretes e do grupo social, as diferentes espécies, a linguagem e o estilo, as circunstâncias da composição, da transmissão e da recepção dos textos.
